Is It Thyroid Cancer?Dr. Mark E. As the disease starts, it's likely that the cat has simple hyperplasia. As it progresses and hyperthyroidism develops, nodules of adenomatous hyperplasia form which soon turn into an adenomatous nodule or nodules.

By the time we diagnosis this condition, no cat has only hyperplasia. The term adenomatous hyperplasia is a pathological term which mean that the thyroid nodules have areas that look like hyperplasia next to areas with clear cut adenoma.

Bottom line: all cats will have a thyroid adenoma or adenomatous nodule at time of diagnosis. With time, this tumor will grow and can transform into a more malignant lesion, similar to colon cancer in people.Dr. Mark E. It was about 2 cm and inoperable. He was always hungry and had lost weight, but his thyroid numbers were in the normal range. He was put to sleep on the table.
